Dev Log 1 - Into Digital Virtual Reality

In the pre-production stage of My Ordinary AR Life, I was tasked with designing and implementing a critical aspect of our game: the VR/AR headset. This device acts as the central tool for players to engage with the world we’ve built and forms the core of the player’s experience.
Our game exists in a unique space, a virtual reality adventure within the digital medium of gaming. While this may sound recursive, it highlights a key theme we’re aiming to explore: the interplay between physical and virtual realities. To enhance immersion, our goal was to emphasize the feeling of operating within an augmented digital space while still maintaining a smooth, intuitive experience for players.
One of my key contributions to this vision was developing the player controller. Which enables players to move freely within the game world, look around at their surroundings, and interact seamlessly with the environment. The aim was to make every interaction fluid and meaningful, which is especially critical for maintaining immersion in an AR/VR-inspired game.
Another major part for the pre-production stage was creating the in-game AR headset that the player can equip. This headset serves as a bridge between the game’s base layer and an additional augmented layer of information. Currently, it provides a basic heads-up display to indicate that the headset is equipped. Later in production, this will evolve to include key elements such as the player’s score, task progress, and contextual prompts. Beyond functionality, the headset also introduces a sense of flair and futurism, with subtle animations and visual effects.

Going forward, the challenge lies in making this HUD not just an information source but also a part of the narrative and gameplay experience. For example, during minigames, the headset will dynamically change its display to reflect the current minigame along with the player’s performance. Our game will be heavily narrative orientated and adapt based on story progression. My work so far has laid the groundwork for these enhancements, and I’m excited to see how our team can push the headset’s functionality even further.
By focusing on these elements, I hope to provide players with a layered, immersive experience that brings our vision of My Ordinary AR Life to life.
